Hidden REF Festival: Institutions urged to “pull their socks up” and submit more non-traditional outputs
University research teams are missing out on a “huge breadth of research excellence” by shying away from non-traditional outputs in their Research Excellence Framework submissions, potentially harming their performance in the exercise, a conference has heard.
Speaking at the 2025 Festival of Hidden REF, the University of Liverpool’s Natalie Wallis (pictured) said some universities did not even recognise atypical research—such as software, exhibitions or performances—as research outputs at all.
“There are also gaps in support for these diverse output types” across UK higher education institutions, she said.
